‘Akanksha’ the Working Women Hostel inaugurated in Patna, Bihar

&

In Bihar, the Nitish Kumar-led government gave a major gift to the women of Bihar. The government has inaugurated ‘Akanksha’ the working women hostel in Patna. This 50-bed hostel offers all the amenities typically found in premium private hostels, ensuring a comfortable and secure living environment for women in the city.

The hostel is operated by the Women and Child Development Corporation (WCDC) of the Social Welfare Department under the state’s ‘Mukhyamantri Nari Shakti Yojana’. Making good on its previous promises, the government has set up this facility in IAS Colony, Rupaspur, Patna, with the primary goal of providing safe, accessible, and affordable housing for female professionals.

This initiative is expanding across the state; a similar hostel is already operational in Muzaffarpur, and another is expected to open soon in Gaya.

Eligibility & Admission Process:

  • Who can apply: Women working in either the government or private sectors in Bihar.
  • Income Limit: The applicant’s monthly income must be less than ₹75,000.
  • How to apply: Applications are accepted online via WCDC official website.
  • Allotment: Seats are allotted on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis following registration, counseling, and document verification.
  • Required Documents: Applicants may be asked to submit an Employment Certificate, ID Proof, Appointment Letter, Pay Slip, and Local Guardian details.

A Cost-Effective Boon for Working Women

If the promised facilities and security measures are maintained efficiently, this initiative will undoubtedly prove to be a boon for working women.

The most significant advantage is that accommodation is absolutely free. Residents only need to pay ₹3,000 per month for food (mess charges), making it a highly economical option in a growing city like Patna.

Key Facilities Available:

  • Single or double bed options
  • Free Wi-Fi and RO-purified drinking water
  • A four-story building featuring two kitchens on each floor
  • Washing machines for laundry
  • Recreation areas equipped with a TV and indoor games
  • Top-tier security with CCTV surveillance, female security personnel, 24×7 guards, and an on-site warden.

This is undoubtedly a highly commendable step by the Bihar government towards women’s empowerment. The hope now is that the facility is managed efficiently so that the maximum number of working women can benefit from it.
